The HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario (HALCO) is a community legal clinic serving the legal needs of people with
HIV in Ontario. HALCO staff provide legal advice and representation, and engage in public legal education, law
reform and community development activities. The clinic is seeking a lawyer to fill a Staff Lawyer position.
The Staff Lawyer will primarily provide advice, referrals, and brief services, but will also carry a small case load.
The lawyer will focus largely on income maintenance, tenancy, human rights and other administrative law matters.
The lawyer will, over time, have the opportunity to participate in the clinic’s public legal education, law reform and
community development initiatives.
• Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
• Knowledge of poverty law (e.g., income maintenance, tenancy)
• Experience working with marginalized communities
• Knowledge of HIV and affected communities
• Fluency in French

Reporting to the General Counsel, this position is a full-time, permanent position and is
mainly a hands-on, commercial litigation role dealing with breach of contract, property
recovery, PPSA priorities, RSLA resolutions, insurance, and bankruptcy and insolvency
litigation. The Legal Department also manages its cross - Canada external counsel.
In addition, it provides general legal advisory and research services to all company
departments as well as some commercial document drafting and review.
• 1 - 2 years of sound litigation experience (oral and written)
• Knowledge of creditor’s rights and secured transactions
• Ability and willingness to handle a considerable work volume
• Bilingual (French/English), with some knowledge of Quebec law would be considered
