The Legal Services Board of Nunavut (LSB) is a public agency whose core
mandate is the provision of legal services to eligible Nunavummiut clients
in the areas of criminal, family and civil law. A current and critical element
of the success of Nunavut Legal Aid is to engage additional lawyers to
join the current team, a highly dedicated and motivated group working
throughout the Territory.
Canada’s newest Territory was founded on principles of service to the
community, consensus-based decision making and a profound respect for
the land. The societal values espoused in Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (Inuit
traditional knowledge) inform all aspects of life in Nunavut, making the
practice of law in Nunavut truly unique.
Do you want to fast-track your legal career by years, advance your
experience exponentially more quickly than possible anywhere else in
Canada? Would you like to immediately vault the development of your
future practice potential and opportunities in criminal or civil law to a
position that supersedes any of your contemporaries?
LSB’s regional legal aid clinics are located in Cambridge Bay (Kitikmeot
Law Centre), Rankin Inlet (Kivalliq Legal Services), and Iqaluit (Maliiganik
Tukisiiniakvik). Each clinic is staffed by a complement of family and
criminal lawyers, administrative support, and court workers, based both
within the clinics and in the communities. The successful candidates will
possess a minimum of two years of experience, perhaps in a legal aid
setting, and are ready to use their skills in new ways and to contribute to
a growing justice system. The work is pioneering, the impact is deep – the
satisfaction of the labour, contributions and successes is extreme. You will
be heavily involved leading in each and every case, therefore your ability to
adapt, be self-sufficient and entrepreneurial will be the key to your success.
Are you looking to make a change, getting excited by challenging cases,
unique cultural influences, working with innovative and motivated
colleagues? Then we want to talk to you. Do you have an interest in a cross-cultural setting, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to acknowledge
that there is much in this world of ours to be learned? with a professional
and personal experience over a few years? “Nunavut” is a phrase in the
lnktitut language that translates to “our land”, and its official motto is
“Nunavut, our strength”!
