HarperCollins Canada Ltd was created in 1989, the result of the merger of Harper &
Row and William Collins & Sons Canada, Ltd. and in 2014, it also purchased Harlequin
Enterprises Limited. Since then, they have become an award-winning company and
a major publisher of Canadian books. Its authors have won every international and
national prize, including the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Award
as well as the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize and the Man Booker Prize. In addition,
to publishing, the company is responsible for the sales, marketing and publicity of
HarperCollins titles from around the globe.
It is now seeking to hire a VP Legal, General Counsel and Secretary for Harlequin
North America & HarperCollins Canada. This individual will be a key member of the
leadership team and will lead a team of lawyers and a contract administration team. The
General Counsel will support the business objectives of the company by providing legal
guidance, risk advice and compliance analysis. This person will advise on new business,
publishing law, TM/copyright matters, marketing/advertising and commercial contracts,
including licensing, royalty and distribution agreements. This position will report directly
to the President of Harlequin North America & HarperCollins Canada as well as to the
General Counsel Worldwide, New York.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of corporate / commercial
experience gained in a law firm and corporation. Any prior experience in the publishing
or media industry will be highly valued. Experience dealing with publishing law,
trademarks/copyright, marketing/ advertising, new media, sales and compliance matters
will be of interest. Experience strategizing and advising on risk, financial acumen and
excellent interpersonal skills will be required. As you will be leading a team, managerial
experience will also be important for you to succeed in this role.
