HEAD OF LEGAL AFFAIRS
(6+ Years Experience)
Access Copyright is a collective voice of creators and publishers in Canada. A nonprofit, national organization, it represents tens of thousands of Canadian writers,
visual artists and publishers, and their works. This rich repertoire of content is highly
valued by educators, students, researchers, corporate employees and others who need
to copy and share content. Access Copyright licenses the copying of this repertoire
to educational institutions, businesses, governments and other organizations. The
proceeds gathered when content is copied, remixed and shared are passed along to
copyright-holders, ensuring the continued creation of new and innovative works.
Access Copyright is now looking for a Head of Legal Affairs to lead its legal function.
Working closely with and reporting to the Chief Business Affairs Officer, the
Head of Legal Affairs oversees and directs all litigation matters and copyright tariff
proceedings before the Copyright Board of Canada, acts as a senior legal advisor
to the organization on a variety of issues, including risk management, corporate
governance, and privacy, and negotiates, drafts and reviews licensing and other
commercial agreements. This position will be based in downtown Toronto.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 6 years of copyright or intellectual
property law experience gained in a major law firm or corporation. Experience in
the publishing industry or with a collective society would be an asset. Litigation
experience at the Federal Court and/or Copyright Board of Canada would be
of interest, though not a requirement. You must have strong oral and written
communication skills, sound business judgment, and be able to prioritize competing
demands. Any prior experience in managing others would also be an asset.
This is an exciting time at the organization, as it expands its focus on innovation. Its
people are passionate and committed to the belief that creators and publishers ought
to be fairly compensated for the use of their works. It offers a variety of work with
a competitive compensation package, in a friendly environment. To apply for this
opportunity, please forward your cover letter and CV to Lorene Nagata or Lesa Ong at
NagataCONNEX Executive Legal Search, or contact them for a confidential discussion.
As this is an exclusive campaign with NagataConnex Executive Legal Search,
any resumes received from other sources will be forwarded to it.
