Wittington Investments, Limited is a private holding company controlled by members of
the Weston family. The Company’s holdings include the controlling interest in George
Weston Limited, Loblaw Companies Limited and Choice Properties REI T, which in turn,
operate a number of subsidiaries involved in food processing businesses; supermarkets
and pharmacy retailing businesses; and real estate development and leasing activities. In
addition, the Company owns and operates luxury retail stores in Canada and Europe
under several banners including Holt Renfrew in Canada and Selfridges in the United
Kingdom. The Company also owns a commercial real estate portfolio.
As the Company continues to evolve, its need for in-house counsel has also increased. The
work in this interesting and dynamic organization is varied and challenging. The scope of
work is varied and spans from financings and treasury matters, investment management
related matters, corporate governance and advisory work, commercial real estate leasing
and development activities, insurance to compliance and risk management. In addition
to Wittington, the legal group also supports The W. Garfield Weston Foundation and
its philanthropic activities as well as the Family Office. This newly developed position
of Director, Legal Counsel will play an integral role in supporting all of these entities.
The position will report to the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Wittington.
The ideal candidate will have 4 - 7 years of general corporate and commercial practice
and M&A experience. Experience in commercial real estate, private equity and/or joint
ventures will also be of interest. You should have the ability to work independently, build
relationships with the business groups and instruct external counsel. Strong business
acumen, excellent judgement, high integrity and superior negotiating and drafting skills
will also be essential to succeed in this role as will the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
