Lawyer – 2 Year Contract
Reporting to the City Solicitor, the Lawyer provides and assists the City Solicitor in providing
legal services to City Council and its Committees. The Lawyer assists the City Solicitor to provide
legal advice to City staff and to Council and its Committees on a wide variety of legislation
and issues including respecting municipal, planning, licensing, real property, contract, human
rights and constitutional law; act as the City’s legal counsel before various Ontario Courts
and administrative tribunals; negotiate and draft agreements respecting goods, services, real
property, planning and land development; and to represent the City’s interests in real property

The main responsibilities of the In-House Legal Counsel position include providing legal
opinion and options to child protection personnel and representing the Agency at all levels
of court. Specifically, NEOFACS seeks a lawyer who is a member in good standing with the
Law Society of Upper Canada and has working experience with the Child, Youth and Family
Services Act. A lawyer with proven litigation skills, negotiation techniques and an ability
to develop strong interpersonal relationships while working within a team is essential.
Travel throughout the NEOFACS catchment area and fly-in communities along the western
James Bay coast is required. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work
within the traditional cultural norms and values of the communities along the western
James Bay coast. Proficiency in the French language and the Cree language is an asset.
Experience working with Indigenous communities is also an asset.
