The Legal Services Division of the City of Toronto is seeking two (2) lawyers to
provide advice and conduct prosecutions of City by-laws and various provincial
offences. These positions will require one individual to work extensively with the
City’s Municipal Licensing and Standards Division, and one individual to work
extensively with the City’s Toronto Fire Services Division, under the direction of the
Director of Prosecutions.
These positions will require that you provide advice to enforcement officers on
complex multi-faceted matters, provide a broad range of prosecution services
on behalf of the City of Toronto, as well as providing advice and working with
enforcement staff on prosecutions which may also raise issues under the Criminal
Code, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, Cannabis Act, Cannabis Control
Act, Provincial Offences Act, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, other provincial
statutes and municipal by-laws. Additionally, you will be required to provide advice
in the drafting, review and implementation of policy and legislation, in particular with
respect to municipal by-laws, and the City of Toronto Act. You may also be required to
appear before administrative tribunals, appeal courts, the Superior Court of Justice on
Judicial Reviews, Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal. Your application should
demonstrate your skills and experience in these areas.
You must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. You possess
excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work
independently in a fast paced environment, and the ability to provide sound legal
advice to enforcement staff and City Divisions. Computer literacy is required.
