Legal Counsel IQALUIT, NU
Several opportunities are available within the Legal and Constitutional Law Division.
Working under the general direction of the Deputy Minister of Justice, the Assistant
Deputy Attorney General, and the Director of Legal and Constitutional Law, you’ll
provide legal services to Cabinet, all government departments and certain public
agencies, as well as represent the interests of the Government of Nunavut in all
court and tribunal proceedings, and in intergovernmental and other negotiations.
More specifically, you’ll provide legal services in relation to commercial law matters,
including drafting and reviewing major contracts, contribution agreements, and
templates for use by various government departments. You’ll also provide legal
advice and services in relation to government procurement, labour and employment
law, the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
To qualify, you must have a Common Law degree from a recognized Canadian
university, or a Certificate of Qualification from the National Committee on
Accreditation of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, and be eligible for
membership in the Law Society of Nunavut and/or a member in good standing of
a Provincial or Territorial Bar. You have at least 2 years’ experience doing either
similar legal work or work of a type and breadth that demonstrates competence in
a Government Legal Counsel environment, and demonstrate excellent written and
oral English language skills, sound judgment, and a keen understanding of clients’
interests and needs. Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of
education and experience may be considered.
Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages (Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun,
English and French), and knowledge of the Inuit language, communities, culture and
land, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit are considered assets.
This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
Salary: $110,591 to $148, 356 per annum (commensurate with experience)
Northern Allowance: $15,016 per annum
Housing: Subsidized staff housing is available
